Why clutches wear
A clutch wears a little every time it slips, the same way brake pads do. How long one lasts depends on the car and how it's driven. There's no set mileage.
Signs of clutch trouble
- The revs rise but the car doesn't speed up to match
- The biting point has moved higher up the pedal
- Juddering as you pull away
- A pedal that's gone heavy, spongy or stays down
- A burning smell after a hill start or heavy traffic
Signs of gearbox trouble
- Crunching or grinding as you change gear
- Trouble getting into gear
- Jumping out of gear on its own
- A whine or rumble that changes with the gear you're in
- Oil leaking from under the middle of the car
