Timing belts and cambelts
A timing belt and a cambelt are the same part. It's easy to forget and expensive to ignore.
What it does
The belt keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in step, so the valves are out of the way each time the pistons come up.
When is yours due?
Your handbook or service book gives the interval, usually in miles and years, whichever comes first. Age counts as well as mileage. Rubber perishes even on a car that doesn't do many miles.
- Bought the car used? Check the service history for when it was last done
- Can't find a record? Ring us with the make, model and mileage
- Some engines use a metal timing chain instead, which is a different job
- On many cars the belt also drives the water pump, so it's often worth doing both together
A belt can snap with little or no warning. On many engines that means the pistons hit the valves. Replacing it on time costs far less than repairing that.
